Fast Frankenpig: Converting a new Road Hog

$

Another conversion for Hordes, but this time for the Farrow, a species of sentient bipedal Boar-men.

I do tend to favor the 'animal' races more than humans. I guess I just like animals more than people.

And how can you resist an army of pigs? It's nearly as cool as an army of Apes!

So awhile back I started collecting Farrow, because, you know, I'm addicted to minis.

The Farrow are from the 'Minions' faction for Hordes: the least expansive faction, and to make matters more difficult, it is split between two separate, non-mixable sub-factions: pigs & alligators. Alligators.. another of my favorite animals to paint, so I don't suppose I'll be able to resist them for long either.

So, there aren't many options for minis to field, so when you don't like the look of one of the only two heavy warbeasts, and you don't want to repeat a lot, you have to get creative.

So, not liking the look of the 'Road Hog' I decided I'd have to set about making my own version of this Frankenpig:  Farrow Heavy Warbeasts are made from very large boar beasts and lots of metal & steam.

This is the results of the conversion. Not a lot of the original pig.

Hello Handsome.

I wanted something that felt like Movement. This is the 'Road Hog' after all.
The road Hog is quite fast for a heavy beast, with options to punch it into overdrive.
He's also armed up with a flame thrower, for added ability to 'reach out and touch someone'.
But the original mini looked very static to me:

He's just standing there, feet planted, and while he's got those bouncy spring feet, they're so small and he's so top heavy I just don't think he looks fast.

So I opted for using a Mariner warjack as the base, because it has some more substantial looking legs that look like they have some power in them, plus it's got a nice running pose. One claw arm swinging back, the original flame thrower swinging forward in a threatening manner, and head to one side all flows for running movement.

Nice thing about Hordes is no worry for conversion & game restrictions about which arm holds which weapon, since only warjacks can have specific arms destroyed.

I used the big exhaust from the Road Hog, but had to sculpt a neck and razorback mane. A lot of the muscle work i sculpted doesn't show or is hard to see, but I'm glad I did the effort anyway.

Here's more angles:

I've gone from having a warbeast selection I didn't want because I didn't like the mini to one I'm looking forward to using!

The local game store is going to have an escalation league like last year, so I'm tempted to find the time for it, and maybe bring Pigs this time.

Rotten Tomatoes: Miniatures Review of Squig-like Things

$

Been awhile since I reviewed some miniatures, so here we go!

Recently I stumbled across some 'not-squigs' on Ebay when I was looking for some Squigs for a project.

These were called 'Demonic Tomatoes' which is hard to resist right there.

This is a set of 7 alien beasties, much like GW squigs: same scale and size.

Priced at $25.50 with $5.50 shipping, which seemed reasonable shipping since they were coming from Russia.

Each one is unique (no duplicate sculpts).  No bases are supplied, but that isn't much of a problem for most gamers: we tend to have a lot of extra bases around.

The sculpting is good, and anatomically correct: they have both a mouth and the opposite opening... don't ask where ketchup comes from!

Casting is in resin and is smooth with only a few minor bubbles.

If you're in the market for more squigs and want variety, these should add to your collection nicely.

I found them on this Ebay store, though at the moment looks like there are none for sale there now- but there might be more in the future: http://stores.ebay.com/bdstd-miniature

Here they are:

The one in the bottom right is in 2 pieces, his mouth goes all the way around, so you can position the head in any way you like, he has 3 eyes in the front and one in the back.

Four & Score & More? Coming to Grips with Obsession: Plight of a Blood Bowl Fanatic

No surprise I'm sure if you've visited this blog before: I like Blood Bowl.
Love it in fact.  May be odd since I have an aversion to real Football. But the idea of Orcs, Dwarves, Ratmen & more playing a violent sport appeals to me to no end.  And it seems that isn't just an expression.

You've probably seen the 'Hall of Fame' page on the blog (tab at the top) with all the Blood Bowl teams I've made in recent years. Most were for clients, but some are my own.

Last year I decided I wanted to have one of every team in the book, including the 3 supplemental teams.

That would mean 24 teams. (at minimum).

I don't get to play that often really- the local league never started up again last fall, and haven't heard any stirrings. So why the hell do I need 24 different teams?

I don't.

This isn't about Need.

This is about Greed. Pure unadulterated Want.

Lately, probably because I'm sinking low again, I've been planning projects.
The stereotype is a woman goes shopping for shoes; I plan new teams & armies and plot world domination.

In fact, some races I like so much I just might end up with more than one for it.
Why?  Because of theme. Throw a new theme, different company sculpt or in fact a different 'skin' over the team concept and it can feel really different!

Like my Ape team.

I play these under a Human roster, but since I'm pushing apes around the pitch it *feels* like a team of Apes and I play it that way, so it feels different than a 'human' team.

So here's my checklist for each Blood Bowl race, if I already have a painted team, if I have a team in progress, if I have the minis but haven't started, or if I just have the idea by itself.

It'll give you (and me) an idea about what you might be seeing in the near (?) future.

AMAZONS:
(1) I have a team in progress: a couple minis painted, most primered only, of the Impact Valkyries.
This is a 'combo-team' with extra minis so I can run it as a Norse team too.
(2) I also have minis but haven't started for another amazon team. The theme is classified. Stay tuned.

CHAOS
(1) I have the beautifully sculpted new chaos team from Willy. Haven't started it. I bought extra beastmen so I can also run it as 'only hoof & horns': no chaos warriors.Because I like substandard stuff like that ;)

CHAOS DWARF
(1) My Norse Dwarf team I have plans for to give it another combo-option: 4 extra minis to run it as Chaos dwarf.
(2) I have some Rackham minis for a 'clearly evil' theme Chaos Dwarf team. Still in blisters & boxes.

DARK ELF
(1) Another purely planned team. My 'Dark Elf' team won't be elves at all. Another 'new skinned' team who's theme is classified.  Stay Tuned

DWARF
(1) My most recent team I finished for myself. The Norse Dwarf team is finished and combos as Norse and soon to be Chaos Dwarf as well.
(2) Almost forgot.. I have the Dwarf Gladiators from the Kickstarter coming too. Fun theme.

ELF
(1) One of my '2nd ed.' teams. Still in it's giant plastic blister: all 2nd ed. GW elves.

GOBLIN
(1) After the last goblin team I feel the need for my own. I have started to collect some minis for it. I was going to do a different 'skin' but changed my mind back to goblins just because goblins are so cool I must have real goblins.

HALFLING
(1) Just a plan. I want the not-yet-released Ramos 'pro-team' halflings. They just look so fun to paint!

HIGH ELF
(1) I have a team I converted from plastic GW High Elves over a year ago. I started a bit of paint, but have changed my mind, and will start over with a different paint scheme.  Really looking forward to them.

HUMAN
(1) I have my finished Ape team. I love apes, so this will likely stay my 'human' team representative.
(2) I won the newest GW minis team, and have an idea for a theme with them. I'll do them someday, but will I keep them or sell them?  I haven't yet decided. The Apes are so fun, not sure I will feel I must keep the actual humans.

KHEMRI
(1) Late last year I converted a team from various sources. It really 'speaks' to me. It is 'classic Ancient Egyptian Undead' so I'm looking forward to starting their paint.. someday.

LIZARDMEN
(1) One of my favorite teams I have ever painted, my 'Credence Crudwater Revilers'.  I won a Best Painted award with these and just love them. Definitely among my top 'won't sell these' teams.
(2) I started converting a team of 'Stunty Skinks' from GW plastics, for more dynamic poses.  But I may end up adding some Saurus to them too, since I also like their Saurus.  I like lizardmen enough that yes, I do want to own 2 Lizardmen teams.
(3) Really? Yep. I have plans for another team using lizards as a 're-skin' but they'll function fine as a Lizardmen team too, so yeah.. i'll have 3 Lizardmen teams.  Somebody help me.

NECROMANTIC
(1)  I've made a few of these for other people, and started a team for myself. A classic monster team.

NORSE
(1) My Norse Dwarf team is done and finished.
(2) I have the Valkyrie team in progress.

NURGLE
(1) Similar to the Khemri team, I started this about the same time. But unlike the Khemri, it isn't a classic theme- it's a different theme.  Classified... Stay tuned.

OGRE
(1) I have some minis for an Ogre team I got a few years ago. I shared the idea with a client and will be making a team for him, with the same theme, but different miniatures (ones he selected that appeal most to him, as it should be). So that theme will be revealed in about a month.
(2) Call me crazy. I came up with another theme idea today that I am crazy about.  Well, I'm in need of pursuing my creative impulses and desires for 'new shiny' for my own emotional health, so what the hell.
But no peaking!  Classified until further notice. Do I need two teams of such a hard to play frustrating team? Yes.

ORC
(1) Another of my '2nd edition' teams.  My Bronze Boars are complete and I love them.  Probably my favorite 2nd edition minis.

SKAVEN
(1) I have a big blister of more 2nd ed. rats than I need.  But I haven't started the team.  I haven't decided on the color scheme yet. I'm thinking all white rats with either blue or purple uniforms. hmm.
(2) I found some other Ratmen minis that will go well with the Impact Ratmen I like so much.  There are a few on the Impact team that are just amazingly fun.  There are not a lot of sculpts, so I thought they'd become a 'Blood Bowl 7's' team, but with the addition of these others, they'll be a full team.
Two Skaven teams? Yes. I love Rats, and the 2 teams will have a very different look to them.

UNDEAD
(1) I ordered some minis for this team this week. It's one of the best teams, but it never really called to me. But then I stumbled across some minis that said 'Hey! I could be a Blood Bowl team!' and I replied back 'Holy Hell you're right!'  This is going to be fun, and a team that for the theme I will be eager to play.
yeah yeah... Classified.  Stay Tuned.

VAMPIRE
(0) Uhh... hell. I need one for the 24, but I haven't thought of anything yet.  Guess I'll wait for inspiration to strike.

WOOD ELF
(1) The other 'best team' in Blood Bowl. I have a team that is a 'different skin' but pretty obviously 'wood elf'. They're even 2/3 finished.  Just need the time and motivation to finish them.

CHAOS PACT
(1) Very happy and content with my 'Narnia' theme team.  Fun to play too.

SLANN
(1) I have the happy kermit Greebo frogs finished. Love them. But I need to make some more for a full extended team. They're playable, but would be nice to have the extras.

UNDERWORLD
(1) I have my converted from GW plastics team. I used it in a league but it's still less than half painted.
(2) Geez.. I need a 2nd of these? When I find a good second theme I do!  I had, just sitting around, all the minis I needed except for one for a gator-themed Underworld team. Just buy 1 mini for a team?  Sold.

So, completed compared to incomplete, I have a lot of project time ahead of me.

And this is just for *1* game I am into.

The Rat Pack: Blood Bowl's Smoothest & Most Stylish Rats

One of the perks for going to the NATC in Las Vegas was a free team.
That's right.  A Free Team.

It's pretty nice when a tournament produces and gives a free miniature, but this one really went in big with a whole team of Skaven.  You could even add a mess of goblins, in the same style, for $20 to have the option of running them as Underworld.

In keeping with the Las Vegas theme, the team is 'The Rat Pack' with all the Skaven hitting the field in their performance tuxes.

As Joey 'The Lips' Fagan explained when asked in "The Commitments" why they had to perform in suits he said 'because my boy, you always play better when you're in your suit".

I was commissioned to paint someone's team from the event, so I still have my team left to be done.
This one was requested to be in the colors of Arizona State University, so they have Blue suits, White shirts and Red ties.

So Sharp.

Let's check out the rats!

Probably my favorite, the Blitzers, in their fedoras just look so cool.

But everyone knows it's the Throwers that get the girls.

Not that the Runners don't draw their share of the spotlight.

Linemen: unsung heroes in most teams, in the Rat Pack they too have star power, needing shades to protect their eyes from the flashes of fans' cameras.

But don't mess with them, they have muscle backing them up.

The team all together, now joining the ranks in the 'Hall of Fame' page (tab at the top)

I suppose the obvious music to accompany would be Sinatra, maybe Dean Martin, but for me, my musical taste and musical history this is what I had in my head...

Enjoy!

Sir Cavy of Guinea

The Hound.  One of the most powerful knights of the Seven Kingdoms.
Yet, few remember that he was defeated by another, even more powerful Knight:

The Guinea Pig.

Sir Cavy of Guinea, wealthiest of the Pig Islands, lends his sword to the cause of those he deems most worthy.  Unfortunately anyone who is half worthy in the Seven Kingdoms tends to suffer from terminal idiocy and races toward death faster than he can help prevent it, so Sir Cavy waits and watches.

A friend alerted me to an Ebay auction for this set of Guinea Pig armor.
Both awesome and hilarious.
If I still had a Guinea Pig, and had recently won a sizable lottery, I'd probably buy it.

If you have a Guinea Pig, who might have an ongoing border war with the neighbor's dog, you might consider getting it yourself.  Can find the auction here. Proceeds even go to charity. Pretty Cool.

Tiberion: My Conversion for the Skorne Character Titan

Time to show another conversion!

For my ever-growing (and no paint progressing) Skorne Army, I couldn't resist adding the character Titan, Tiberion. Tiberion is a real brute.  A massive, stoic, stubborn Titan if ever there was one.

Armed with a massive warclub and shield this Titan is the rock armies break themselves on.

But I wanted to do the guy justice.  Something special for a Character beyond just the character head & weapon upgrade kit stuck onto a standard Sentry Titan.

So I started with the Bronzeback as a basis for the conversion.  The Bronzeback is a great deal more massive than a regular Titan, which seemed fitting for a character Titan. The problem is a Bronzeback has a hunched pose which would look odd with a shield and not impressive for the club. Also, the Bronzeback doesn't have any back armor, and being the epitome of defense, I figured Tiberion would have the Sentry style armor. So here goes:

I gave him a small rock to stand on, and angled his torso back and sculpted some tummy to cover the gap that created, giving him a more upright posture.  I used the plastic kit arms, since the Bronzeback arms didn't work well for the weapon & shield. I did however use the Bronzeback tusks, and broke one off- he is a veteran, he's going to have taken some damage in his life!  I also moved the extra helmet flaps from the side to the top-center, to make a helmet styled something more like a Samurai might have.

For comparison, here is how Tiberion is supposed to look:

And more angles of mine:

Here you can see his custom armor to match the style of the Titan Sentry.

Batter Up!

And a comparison shot to see how Tiberion compares to a standard Titan Sentry:

I have to think he's more impressive with this added size.
As normal his head and weapon would have just been stuck onto the fellow on the right.

I know, I know... "Paint him!" you say. Someday, just not as soon as he deserves.

Time to Play "Guess the Project"!

I did this once before, where i show a picture, then more, seeing who can guess the specific project concept first. I don't know how long I'll draw this one out though- I want to reveal it pretty quickly, so I can put up a poll and get some input to aid my indecision for something in the future.. more on that later.

So here are your accelerated paced clues:

"Hey Yorrik!" says little gator "I know it was always a dream of yours to fly..."

"When biting isn't enough..."

"Watch where you're swinging those!"

Disclaimer:
Quotes have nothing really to do with it, but since I can't explain anything yet, I had to write something!"

So, what do you think the project is?

"Guess the Project", Hint #2

See the last update's comments for my hints from the last guesses.
Some very close calls, but no Bulls' Eye yet.

I did manage to mislead some with all the weapons.  It isn't a fantasy skirmish warband, though someday they might be!  I do plan to make more gators someday, with more weapons, for use as a skirmish warband, but not yet. The Blood Bowl guess was correct... now lets add some minis and see where the guesses go:

Gators of various sizes and types... what could they represent?  Considering they associate with these too:

So what team is this?

(Cue Jeopardy Theme Now...)

Poll: Chaos Conundrum! let your voice be counted.

Chaos Cup: 2013.

One of the 'Blood Bowl Majors' Tournament Events around the world.
The only one that is held in the United States. One of two that is held in North America.
Two others in Europe, and I think a fifth is added to the four, and is in Australia?  I'm not clear on that.

Just like me I guess to have gone to a Blood Bowl Major but not the one closest to home: I went to the Dungeonbowl in Dusseldorf, Germany earlier this year (still have to get around to writing up those game reports!)  But I'm finally going to go to the US major: The Chaos Cup, in Chicago. Should be fun.

And also just like me, if I have the choice, I'm likely to want to make a new team for a tournament.

Since the Chaos Cup has a 'Chaos Theme' (stands to reason), I feel inspired to take a team with a Chaos Theme, or one that fits into the 'four chaos chosen teams' : Chaos, Nurgle, Chaos Pact, Underworld.
-- Sorry Chaos Dwarves, the organizers are not acknowledging your chaos-worthiness.

So I'm going to run a Poll, to see what all of you think for which team I should take.
Now, I am an indecisive fickle jerk, so I may take your winning choice and just ignore it... how is that for Chaos? But I'll at least give it more weight in my decision. So you're getting your money's worth.

I have a Chaos Pact team, but I'd like to take a new team.
I've built a Nurgle team, but the team construction package seems too restrictive to get a fun team I'd want to play out of Nurgle.

I was considering a 'Stunty Underworld' : Troll & 12 goblins. That's it. Theme that it is 'chaos' and fun that it counts for 'stunty cup', and the minis would be very cool: little classic 'hot stuff' type devils and a big devil!
But the team is just terrible.  It has to be the worst in Blood Bowl. Half the trolls that a goblin team has and no secret weapons? The 13 players come in at a team value of 59 out of 100. Not allowing any stars, that's just a painful-bad team to play for a whole weekend. So, despite the cool look they'd have: sadly, no.

For info sake, the construction is Team Value 100.  That's a basic starting team of 1 million gold pieces.
Then you get 150 team value to purchase skills, but you can not purchase the Leader Skill.

So I've narrowed it down to 4 choices! Some are true 'Chaos choices' for the event, others just have a visual chaos look, and I give no weight to being 'official' past the desire to indulge in the 'Chaos' of it all.

Option 1: Demons

This would be a 'demon alliance' team. Obviously very 'chaos' in appearance, but it would be a DarkElf roster team: Bloodletter Blitzers, Nurgle Linemen, Daemonette Witch Elves, Horror Runners.

The Dark Elf team is a pretty good team, but in a TV 100 environment will struggle because it has expensive players.  I'd either have 1 re-roll or even none, because I'd surely not want to eliminate one of the player types and lose out on having all 4 demons types represented.

It appeals to me because it'd be fun to convert from the plastic kits, and fun to paint.

Option 2: Nurglings
Yes, a whole team of nothing but these cute nasty little guys.  This would be an 'Ogre' team: big masses of Nurglings for Ogres and individual 'straggler' nurglings for snotlings.

The Ogre team is one of the worst teams. I'd probably just be looking to rack up casualties and fouls.

It appeals to me because the little guys are so cute ;) and I like the theme of concentration of nothing but nurglings.

Option 3: Beastmen

The Willy Beastmen. And I say Beastmen, not Chaos, since though this is a Chaos Roster, I would take NO Chaos Warriors!  Only 1 Minotaur and Beastmen. Horns & Hooves and nothing but.

Chaos is an expensive team, and not a great one at low Team Value.  Eliminating the Warriors cuts cost so I can afford 3 Re-Rolls, though does sacrifice the strength bonus.  But it means the team is faster, has more horns-blitzing options, and it's just a fun theme.

This appeals to me because of the characterful faces and the self-imposed handicap of no warriors.

Option 4: Voodoo Gators

The least Chaos-appearing, but does fit into one of the '4 approved chaos teams' since it is an Underworld team. * Congrats to Neil & Bill for their spot-on guesses! And the Voodoo Magic of controlling gators and raising a giant Gator from the dead by Dark Magic seems pretty Chaotic enough.

The Underworld Team is an alliance of Skaven (larger gators) and Goblins (little gators) and a Troll (Big Dead Gator).  And they can have secret weapon stars: A Bomber, Chainsaw, and Ball & Chain (see the minis from 2 updates back) I can't squeeze them all in for a TV100 team, but I could get 2 of 3.

This appeals to me because I love painting reptiles and it's a pretty unique theme. The bases will be filled with  swampwater, so that should look pretty cool.

The Choice.

I'd like to get my pre-registration in by June 30th. And I want to play every one of these!
So help me decide please!

Select in the poll in the upper left corner of the blog and leave your comments below for which team idea you like best and why: why you'd like to play it, play against it, see it, whatever your reasons might be.

Also, my goal for the event is not to win it (not that'd I'd decline the trophy if I did) but I'm -obviously- not looking for the optimum team to crush all who come before me, but I'd like a challenging team that has a chance to not lose all my games too.

Thanks!

So Who Was Chosen to Champion My Cause at the Chaos Cup?

If you didn't notice the Poll running the last few days, it's temporarily still up, but finished, in the left corner.

I had to decide, something I'm generally poor at, what team to take to the Chaos Cup Blood Bowl Tournament this year.

The Poll showed a tie for first between the Beastmen & the Voodoo Gators, with Nurglings not too far behind, and the chaos demons trailing behind.  I was surprised about the demons, I'd have thought they'd be more popular- lots of converting potential there.

So what team will it be?

I figured I'd leave it up to all of you, but you weren't much more decisive than I was!
But not to worry, all of those teams will be made in the future.  I'm doing the 24+ remember!?

So in the end I let the tie-breaker come down to theme. Since I'm a big fan of theme.
The Chaos Cup seems to be dedicated to a different Chaos God each year, and this year is for Slannesh.
If you're not familiar with the Warhammer pantheons, Slannesh is the Chaos God of pleasure & pain and I'm pretty sure is the patron saint of dominatrices.

I've always wanted to make an all Beastmen team, in pink armor, dedicated to Slannesh of course.
A Chaos team without any chaos warriors, just the animals: Minotaur & Beastmen, and name them:

Always loved that band, and the name just seems to fit beastmen overstimmed on sensation.

Maybe the name doesn't fit exactly into the 'place/mascot' but psychedelic is a state of mind, it could be a realm of real estate too, why not? When someone says "oh that's so Psychedelic" maybe it is like when someone says "oh it's so French" or "it's very American".

All this time a Psychedelic Trip was actually a destination! Who knew?
That might explain those William Shatner Priceline ads.

So that is that!  The Psychedelic Furs will play in the tournament dedicated to their patron god, goddess, hermaphroditic deity.. something.

I already had the team made, but the painting will be a slow back-burner project, at least until the September deadline starts getting close!

But I'll drop a couple players every so often to introduce them to you.

I've decided to let Chaos reign, and take just 2 re-Rolls! so I can have 13 players.
The Team may be named 'Psychedelic Furs' but the team members have names inspired from various 80's New Wave bands.  I know which ones some of them are already, others will get their names as I figure it out, though the roster is submitted so players, skills & player names are set in stone.

Here are two Beastmen. "Squeeze" on the left, and "Echo" on the right.
Since I have 12 Beastmen, and there are only 8 poses I knew I'd be converting some, and what better conversion for Chaos than mutations?

So I have 2 with tentacles, 2 with claws, one with an extra arm, and one with a scorpion tail.

More team members to show in the future!

In the meantime, an hour and a half of some great music to get you through Monday, or whatever day you found this on.

Enjoy!

Little Lizard for Eucalyptus Bowl 2013

A quick update for a Blood Bowl tournament I wish I could go to, The Eucalyptus Bowl.

The amount of cool stuff they have for this event is amazing.  From custom playing pitches, to scoreboards to the frill neck lizard 2013 special miniature.

I was quite lucky to be given a couple of the special miniatures before the event, and painted one and shipped him off to Australia, hoping the post gets him there in time, where he'll be a prize of some sort.

If I was wealthy I'd certainly have loved to have hand delivered it, and play in the event.
Well, maybe start saving and try for next year?

Here is the miniature:

I decided to interpret the dagger as made from a large reptile's tooth, rather than a metal dagger, but it could be done either way.

The Miniature actually comes with 4 different choices for the head, and 4 different arm choices!

The organizer requested that I use this head & arm, making him a nice choice to represent the Lizardman Team star 'Hemlock' who has the ability 'stab'.

Here are some other possible combinations:
Frill Neck Lizard 2 Frill Neck Lizard 3 Frill Neck Lizard 4

I just fell in love with this little lizard, he's just so cute!
It's hard to pick my favorite head & arm combination.
My copy will undoubtedly make his way as a skink star to the Skink Stunty team I'm making.

I hope everyone who is lucky enough to attend the Euc Bowl will have fun, and I'm very envious of you!

Wake for Weedbert

So I recently found out that an old friend of mine died not long ago.

He was the oldest of three brothers I became friends with long ago, and though we'd grown out of touch I'd hear updates now and then since one of those brothers remains among my closest friends, as much as I would imagine an actual brother.

Still, you aren't expecting someone who's just 51 to die of a heart attack.
But I guess it happens.

For most humans, I think the best we can hope for at the end is to have left people with some good memories, so it seems right to share some of those gaming-related memories of a fun, goofy guy who often was jokingly called Weedbert, after his favorite past-time which he often partook.

Now, of course this is Radagast, but the two fellows did have a lot in common, and the further along into life he got, the more Joe resembled Radagast!

In my second year in University I transferred to San Francisco State and not long after living there, working in a cafe, became friends with a co-worker, and then his two brothers, who would come in for free coffee.

In talking to them, I discovered we had in common RPG gaming, though I hadn't had the time or opportunity to play since early High School.  After talking about it some we decided to get together to roll up some characters and give it a shot.  My girlfriend at the time had never played before but was interested, so we had 5 people: not a bad start!

We'd meet at the house and spend as much time joking and being off-topic as often as RPGing, but that's good fun too.  We started with AD&D 2nd edition (I still have those books) and after some time switched the characters and game over to the Hero system, using 'Fantasy Hero'.

To this day that party was some of the most memorable RPG characters I've ever known:

Calaban: the rather stoic, reluctant leader.  Elven ranger with dual fighting axes.
Beleran Chrystalfyre: the pompous, self-absorbed Elven Sorcerer.
Kievar: the half-elf,half-halfing master thief and trap expert who had a nervous breakdown.
Fauna: the stressed halfling fighter-thief who obsessed with guilt over any damage she inflicted.
Fenris: the halfling monk, master of throwing stars with a very open heart.
Door: the eager to please mimic.
Weedbert: the off-in-his-own-world human healer cleric who created some of the most unusual circumstances.

In the Hero system you start with a certain number of building points to buy your stats, skills and abilities.
You can get more points by 'buying' defects and disadvantages. So this is how his brain worked...

This cleric was something of a 'man of the common people',he'd put all of his points into healing... no adventuring party is going to turn that away are they?

In an urban adventure, filled with political intrigue, investigating who was behind a plot to spread a plague, then 'assembly-line' with vats of acid for the creation of enchanted skeletal soldiers out of the newly deceased, and the organized crime syndicate funding the project...

But Weedbert was off on his own personal side-story, trying to heal the masses of the plague, which is what you might expect from a devoted high level healer in the middle of a plague.
(Even plague doctors need a break now and then)

The characters had become pretty high level at this point, and this healer, the only one who seemed to have the ability to cure someone of the plague soon became something of a Messiah figure!  For this city, hundreds dying daily, rumors of the dead walking the streets at night, killing people while a war raged right beyond their land, the commoners believed it was the end of the world... but they had a savior!

In short order there was a new messiah-cult!
This cleric was followed by crowds of thousands wherever he went, completely devoted to him.

Nice guy right?

Welll.....

Turns out he'd used the disadvantage system to create his own mechanic whereby humans who were in his presence became increasingly subjected to the chance of contracting a fatal illness.  This would give the cleric energy points which he could then use to fuel his spells, such as *curing* the disease.

Yes, the cleric who was saving so many from certain death was in fact the source of plague itself.

The more the masses followed him, the more became sick, creating more healing power which he'd then use, triggering his disadvantage creating more plague.

If there's a more apt metaphor for much of the history of religion, I don't know it.

And then there was the time in the city riots when he was sure if he cut the bridges to the island in the river he could sail the island downstream to assault the merchant district...
Umm... well, he was often high so that might explain that.

He also made a pretty convincing Sewer Urchin!
(has to be a better picture somewhere, but I can't find it)

You know, the best thing about gaming is that it gets people together.
It's a fun excuse: You build something, you enjoy the company, you create some memories.

That's about all we leave behind, but it's something.

Jovian Leviathans : The Galaxy's Most Fearsome Monsters: Also a Tyranid BFG Fleet

When dinosuars walked the earth the ground shook under their weight and mammals hid in fear.

When man braved the seas their sturdiest ships were broken by the backs of the great cetaceans.

As the intelligent races of the small rocky worlds escaped their homes' gravity wells feeling themselves to be undisputed masters, winners of evolution's race, they found they were once again insignificant.

For the Jovian Worlds hold true terrors: Leviathans.

Leviathans, often called 'living space ships' since they rival the largest vessels ever built, are native to the gas oceans of worlds which dwarf the rocky inner planets of the countless stars.  Some say they are no more than very large cattle, but others believe they have a long and ancient intelligence which has spanned the galaxy, inhabiting nearly every gas giant. To make matters more dangerous, they can travel within the vacuum of space, and are fiercely territorial.

.....................................................

For a very long time I've wanted to convert up a fleet of 'living ships' for general space ship gaming or to use as a Tyranid fleet in Battlefleet Gothic. The minis that GW made were alright, but it's a lot more fun to make my own. Besides, I wanted to have a lot more variety. Different species, some more abstract, and others more recognizable as a 'creature' to a human eye.

I always liked the idea of Moya from Farscape:

Though Moya is a 'living ship' that's been genetically engineered to function as a ship for small terrestrial beings like us.  What I was after was something a bit more natural and primal.

I used the Tyranid BFG fleet construction rules as a guide, in case I ever want to use them in that game, but in a more general sense I also wanted to have Small, Average, Bigger & Big to count as Class I, II, III & IV for War Rocket.

I've written my own fleet rules for 'Jovian Leviathans' to be compatible with the War Rocket rules, because I think they'd be very fun in that genre. One of my favorite things in MOOII (Masters of Orion II) was the space dragons & space eels that guard good planets. So why not?  Seems just as appropriate in the fun flash & pulp of War Rocket as it does for the Doom & Dark of BFG.

I'll share the fleet rules in another update soon.

I've worked on this fleet on & off for while, and it's nearly finished. But I didn't want to wait any longer for painting before I showed them ;)

Hive Ships

So you saw the preview Leviathan in the last two updates and the first picture here.  This is a 'Hive Ship' for BFG or a Class IV (actually it will be a larger 'Class V' in War Rocket) or just a very big battleship in any other system.
Miloam

I also built a very different species but also a Hive Ship or Class IV:

This species is more of a 'Torpedo' shooter and a slicer, while the first one, Miloam, relies on claws and hail of shooting shots. I took inspiration for this one from the Shadow vessels of Babylon 5.

Cruisers

The next class down: BFG Cruisers or War Rocket Class III:

I built two of this species. The Tiger of the Jovian Seas.  A decent far striker and a deadly dorsal slicer, to rip open the ever more massive jellyfish-like floaters.

Another cruiser.  A stalker: short range lance-like weapons and heavy jaw-claws to crush prey.

The last of the Cruisers / Class III species. In BFG a torpedo vessel. All of the Cruisers / Class III species have a dorsal slicer as a common trait.

Escorts

Kraken with battery fire in BFG or Class II in War Rocket

Kraken (Maybe Vanguard Drone?) with Feeder Tendrils / Class II

Watch out! Coming to get you!

Kraken with Lance-type weapons / Class II

Escort Drone with Lance-type weapons / Class I

Escort Drone with battery-fire / Class I

Some more green-stuff work & bit of filing to be done still, and need to make fighter & assault craft still.

But for the most part the fleet is done.  More than enough for some good games of War Rocket, 1500 pts or more in BFG and lots of options for whatever other system I might use.

I'll probably have to paint them before mounting on flight stands, since I'll probably use clear acrylic stands with hex bases, so I could use them easily on battlefields in both space and over alien worlds.

Middle Earth Nature Walk: Rangers & Woses

I recently completed a bit of Mithril Miniatures for a client's extensive Mithril collection.

I do love Mithril Miniatures. They have such smooth elegant lines and realistic, not excessive, detail.

I once had a Wood Elf army for Warhammer that was about 2/3 Mithril minis.
Never should have sold those.

So this set was Rangers & Woses: two different approaches to living in the wild.

The challenge here was to match the colors & styles of the previous painter, who had painted a lot of these, so that the new additions would match.

It can be a very interesting process to duplicate someone else's style, it gets you analyzing and thinking about the process more than proceeding on your own.
And matching colors, finding the right blends to match is fun.
For a few years in university I worked as a picture framer, where you deal a lot with color theory, but never more than when someone brought in a scratched frame and you'd mix paints and inks to cover the damage.
Trying to match a color is one of the best ways to really understand the make up of the color.

So, to the Mithril:

Woses

The example one didn't have a spear, so I got to paint the wood staves in my favorite method.
The leader's decorative paint was inspired by Magwa. Couldn't resist.

Apparently, they do a lot of walking!

Rangers

I do love how Mithril Miniatures handles cloaks!

I like how these two interact...

Woman, "Why, that's no way to hold a child!
Man, "huh..what?"
Woman, "dear Iluvatar, but that is an ugly child..."

Beastmen of the Psychedelic Furs w.i.p. Intro Lineup pt.2

Time flies...

It's been three weeks since I showed the first couple players of The Psychedelic Furs, the Slanneshi Beastmen Blood Bowl team headed to Chicago. Only a bit more than two months to go.

If you missed their intro, check that out HERE.

The team has a long way to go still... I've done *zero* work on them since the last update.
No time... too much other stuff.

But I did order some bases- I changed my mind on how I'll be doing the bases for the team, and would rather paint them on their bases, so waiting for those to arrive absolves me of the sin of procrastination.

So let's meet two more of the Furs...

This is #2 Ber Lin on the left, and #3 Adam Ant on the right.

Both my players with wrestle have a tentacle mutation, so it is easy to identify.
--Easy to Identify means no, I won't put a fluffy ring around the miniature.  ;)

Adam Ant is one of my players with Guard.
With that pose, the wicked looking horns and that threatening tail he does look like he'd ben serious about guarding something!

Worth noting that these two are the same miniature.
The Willy Miniatures team comes with 8 distinct Beastmen poses, which is great, but I still needed more since I planned on the all beast team. So i ordered 4 extra with the Kickstarter, picking 4 of my favorite poses that were not too distinct for my extras.  Simple matter of shuffling those extra heads and converting: one got the intended arm, the other got a tentacle, and the arm mini got a tail added, and now they're looking different enough they won't have an ego-clash on the pitch... goats can be stubborn.

Though the team is 'The Psychedelic Furs' I'm sure you've noticed the wider net cast to find names for the players, so in their honor I'll leave you with a song each below.

I did say goats are stubborn... I better give the last two members their songs too, or there might be trouble.

Wish me luck on finding the time to finish the team before kick off in October!
With all of the commissions and other projects vying for attention it could be a close call.

Enjoy!

The first two beastmen, repeated from the first introduction update:
#10 Squeeze on the left with Wrestle, and #5 Echo on the right with Guard.

Twice the Music on a Tuesday.. Enjoy!

Evolve Past the Playground Please: On that Satirotypical Wargame Mocking UK article

$

Not living in the United Kingdom, I doubt that I would have ever heard about an article written to be a political poke that used the apparently laughable mock-worthy hobby of wargaming as the vector for  criticism. The article is anything but groundbreaking: just the same old tropes paraded out for expediency.

But it has generated some interesting discussion, such as over at Porky's Expanse (always good for a dip in the cerebral pool) and Big Lee has a lot of interesting things to say about it too. And the topic is making the rounds.

I started leaving a comment at Big Lee's when I realized it was going to get long. and involved.
I tend to get very anthropological when I consider society.  It's just one of the major lenses I look at things with.  But it's not a quick way to explain society: I can't just leave things at 'it's good' or 'that'll do some damage, I can't approve' or other similar fast sum-ups. So of course this is less about the article that spawned the discussion and more about the implications it makes about human society in general.

So I thought I'd better just give it the room and get it out of my system.

Regarding the article and all such examples of group-think chest thumping, this is an example of the weakest form of conformity: the author is appealing to a wider group for approval and acceptance by denigrating a smaller group perceived to have less social standing. It's the equivalent of a jerk at a party chiming into a serious conversation with "it's like women drivers, am I right?"  .. well, no..you're just a jerk.

As a pack-species, humanity has a strong desire to be part of a group. Unfortunately, one of the easiest ways to draw the lines of that group is by pointing out those who are not desired in the group.  It is beneath a sentient, thinking-individual to let those instincts trample over reason and marginalize other people.

Millions of years of evolution thrown aside for the quick security blanket of the bully.

The fact that this kind of mentality also stifles free expression, creativity and individuality is another shame, since that is one of the greatest attributes of our species.

Every subculture group can find examples of individuals that fit the negative stereotypes associated with their group but that doesn't validate the stereotype. Also troubling is the idea that a derogatory stereotype is being supported by people within the hobby being stereotyped. As if joining an outside group in mocking the 'stereotypical' members of their own hobby-group somehow protects them and establishes them to the larger society as 'one of the good ones'.  Plenty of examples in history of the dangers of that type of thinking.  No one is going to appreciate all hobbies, but to appeal to mockery for social acceptance is just sad and should be beneath someone's dignity.

When you get down to it, the very notion that one hobby or another, one subcultural past-time or another, is 'cool' or not, socially acceptable or not, is just silly.

It is all pretend really. That's what makes me laugh about how serious some people take stereotypes and society's approval over what is 'cool' or not. It's a playground-level of stupidity.

It is all just random and made up!  It's like fashion. Someone decides they like something, some others like it too, and if they have enough social pressure and 'authority' behind their opinion then they plant their flag of coolness on it and declare victory.

Children are the most feral and instinctual of human beings. Not many of them think, and not very often.
They run on their instincts.  They create social groups around the most trivial of things.
'If your shoes have three stripes you're a loser, cool kids have a crescent' or 'your sunglasses have oval lenses so you are lame, you need round lenses'.. etc. But kids are instinctual animals just driven by their pack-animal DNA, can't really blame them.

But how many adults ever grow out of it?  Not enough apparently: "your hobby is for dorks, our hobby means we're cool so we make fun of you" or "your god is false, our god is the real god, so we can kill you"... some wide ranging affects there but the root of it is the same: random, imaginary social guidelines grounded in nothing more than personal whim and the comfort in collecting others of like minds to make those of different taste miserable. Do we really all need to be the same to be accepted?

It really doesn't matter what people enjoy doing as long as it isn't harming anyone else.  It can all appear pretty ridiculous when you pull back from it.  Is pushing little painted miniatures around a miniature landscape playing out a battle any odder than sitting on a couch, yelling in excitement or anger while watching grown men run around a field with a ball? Is spending time creating miniature soldiers any odder than time spent knitting, or restoring antique cars, or gardening, or collecting spoons?

We're an odd & varied species.  Our hobbies and interests are bound to reflect that.
We should embrace it.  It will make life better for all of us.

Brokentooth's Guide to Goblin Greatness: Thoughts & Plans for Kings of War

You! No, not you..you're hopelessly stupid. 'mind me to feed ya to trolls later. No, You! Yes You, scrappy half-wit! You've got potential, eh? I bet you sneak your siblings' food when they're distracted and blame yer momma.. haha!  I thought as much! Good, good! We need more crafty goblins around here.  Listen to ol' Brokentooth and might learn something.  Maybe you'll wear the brass crown someday eh? When I'm gone.. when I'm good and ready mind you, don't get any ideas, I'm watching you.  Might have broken teeth but my eyes are still sharp!

Yes, listen to Brokentooth and I'll tell you how it all began. When I first gathered goblins and trolls to my banner.  When later the great mountain troll and jabberwock were captured.  When I set the crafters to making the mighty engines of war and carved out this empire for the goblins!

There was a time when the larger folk pushed us around.  Never let yerself think yer small size is a disadvantage. It isn't! It's a blessing from the Great Goblin. Helps us sneak and get what we want! Our smarts are closer to the ground... wisdom in the ground, power in the ground.. not like the big folks with their heads in the clouds, groundless. "Pick on someone yer own size" some say.  Yes! Because those big folk are no match for the likes of us!

Now sit, and get yer finger out yer nose and listen close, and I'll tell you how it began.. years ago...

....................................

So about a year ago I jumped into temptation on Mantic's Kickstarter.
Now that the second shipment arrived awhile back it seems a good time to take a look at this project.

The Decision:

I selected goblins for the kickstarter, because 1. I like goblins and 2. I always thought they'd make a fun army: scrappy underdogs with plenty of odd monsters & warmachines.

A year ago I was having a tough time deciding what i'd use the goblin miniatures for...would I like Mantic's game?  Would I make them for the new version of Warhammer?  Would I keep options for both?

One thing I knew: no Orcs.  Hey, I love Orcs, but Goblins deserve their independence and own land.
While it does sound like the new Warhammer has some aspects that remind me of what was possible back in the Warhammer I started with: 3rd edition...things like goblin units with a front rank of goblin heroes with greatswords.. I still remember when Bill surprised me with that! The fact is there are just too many things that don't appeal to me about Warhammer now:

* Magic is too powerful.  Gandalf threw some augmented firebrands at wolves and had invisble contests of will with Nazgul, he didn't blast out giant swirling purple vorteci with tentacles dragging down whole units at a time. And I prefer magic more Gandalf-esque than high budget Industrial Light & Magic.

*Characters of Herohammer.  Kind of hard to stand up to the Lords of other races with mere goblins.  Sure, goblins should have a challenge and run more often, and need numbers to make up for shortcomings, but in Warhammer, Goblins are designed to be a supporting role to the Orcs.

* Arms race of big stuff.  Monstrous Infantry... then Monstrous Cavalry.  I'm a fan of the grunts.  Sure I like big things like trolls, but I want basic infantry blocks to be worth something more than a speedbump or tarpit.

The Game:

Kings of War fixes all those problems for me.

Magic is a simple system.  A nice perk, a touch of flavor, but not game winning on it's own. If you don't want to use magic even, no problem!  Unlike Warhammer, you don't have to devote a portion of your army to magic defense.  Don't try that in Warhammer.

Characters are more powerful than average guys of course, but they're not likely to swing battles all by themselves.  Also, Characters aren't added to units like in Warhammer. They fight alongside units, not inside units.

Goblins are viable.
The way the army lists are designed and because of how combat works, everything is unit-based and that makes all the difference.

For example:
In Warhammer, a unit of 3 trolls has the facing of a unit of 6 Dwarf warriors.
6 Dwarf warriors have 6 attacks and 6 wounds: one for each dwarf.
If the Trolls have 3 attacks and 3 wounds each, that is 9 attacks and 9 wounds..
well you'd expect trolls to be tougher, so no problem.
Well, the potential problem is for each wound the dwarves take, they'll be losing one attack, but the trolls don't lose any attacks until they've lost 3 wounds: they can attack as long as they're still alive.
This makes balancing by a points system very difficult.

Also, infantry units carry a lot of 'dead weight' when they have ranks of soldiers who may do nothing but add a rank bonus if their friends at the front don't die. Another balance issue: are the points for infantryman number 15-25 worth as much as number 5-14? It depends what happens in the battle.

In Kings of War you purchase units by size, typically troops, regiments and hordes.  They have set points value with set number of attacks, defense and morale break points.

As an added bonus, this means that all units are using the same system of fight at full strength until you waver and fight on until removed, regardless if it's a Giant or a pack of Trolls or ranks of Infantry or a Character.
The stats are different but the system is the same.
Easier to balance and it shows in the product.

The Rulebook with Army Lists reminds me in a lot of ways of Warhammer 3rd edition: the lists are all together, they mostly have the same spells and access to the same magic items.

Army construction is also very relaxed:

Some units are 'solid' units: they're a backbone of the army.
For every solid unit you are permitted to have 1 warmachine and either 1 character or 1 monster.

So easy!

And there are a lot of solid units to chose from.  In a Goblin army these could be goblin archers, goblin rabble, goblin spears, goblin cavalry (spear or archers).

I heard on one of the warhammer podcasts not long ago, one of the hosts lament a proposed spell-strategy as unrealistic because he 'almost never sees an orc army with more than 1 orc unit" I was appalled. Really?

That's a huge problem with Warhammer.  Some units, often ones that conceptually should be representative just aren't used because they're not as good as other units.  But in Kings of War, since all units use the same system of construction and balance, deciding to take a monster or a unit might be more about visual flavor, or minor game effects like unit frontage, slight increase in speed at the expense of some attacks, etc.
Size doesn't matter so much: it's your stats and what you do with them that counts.

What you're left with is a game with simpler rules, a narrower tier of power between different army races as well as units within those armies and so a heavier focus on tactics.

The rules are a free download at Mantic.  Can't get a better price than free, so check it out here

The Way Forward:

So I decided I want Goblins.  I decided I like the Kings of War rules and don't have any interest in pursuing goblins as a Warhammer/Kings of War hybrid army. If I decide in the future to pursue Warhammer again, maybe I'd be more likely to use my Dwarves as a hybrid game force or finish my Bayou Elves, but all-goblins in Warhammer just looks to be something I wouldn't enjoy as much as Kings of War.

And if I ever do play Warhammer with the Goblins it'd be under extremely casual and friendly circumstances where the opponent would have no problem estimating and fudging for the element bases. So no problem.

This means I am completely free to do element basing!

Old Fogey at Hobby Horse had a good suggestion on how to make units with smaller element pieces so they could be used for both, but honestly, the large single piece elements are much more appealing to me.

I'll be basing goblin regiments on single element bases 100mm x 80mm.
A good thing about this is: no movement trays! Just move the unit as a single playing piece!
But the best thing is it frees up the goblins to be rabble-mobs! Unruly masses, not clean neat orderly ranks!
Dwarves or Elves look nice in that Napoeonic aesthetic, but it isn't right for goblins!

I'll also get away with using fewer goblins: as long as the footprint of the unit is correct, then it really doesn't matter how many are on the base.. though it might look odd to see 3 little goblins standing in a field!

Since the rules are favorable for units, I'll end up with a goblin army that looks like a goblin army.

Speaking of how it looks, the monsters are up to interpretation, so I have some varied creatures planned!

Also, the game allows for Allies.
Neutral armies can ally with neutral and either good or evil (not both) and Evil can ally with other evil or neutral and Good can ally with other good or neutral.  Feel free to take any unit you want, and if you have a solid unit you can muster a warmachine and a character or monster from the allied army as well.

This is a counts-as paradise!

This would break Warhammer something fierce.  To cherry pick allied units and then use your army's special magic, items, characters & unique units to combo-effect them? But in Kings of War it's not a problem because there are more subtle differences between units. The downside is that might not appeal to everyone. Some may want a full range of power and oddities, balanced or not.  But for me, I see this as a huge bonus.  There is enough variety for interest & choice, but the game looks more balanced and the wide variety is there for the visual aspect, which satisfies me fine.

My miniatures so far:

I'll be using Mantic, Games-Workshop, Reaper, Gamezone, and who knows what else!

Yikes, this has gone on long!  So I'll save w.i.p. shots of minis for another time.

Who is Brokentooth? :

A couple weeks ago, a few days after I got my Mantic shipment, while eating dinner I broke a tooth!
A lower molar lost a cusp.  So disturbing. My upper molar always had a longer sharp cusp that would hit the lower tooth, and I tend to clamp my jaw when not noticing or when sleeping- related to stress no doubt.
And it gave way.

So 'I broke my tooth' became 'I'm brokentooth' and that seemed like a great name for an aspiring Goblin Lord!

So the Brokentooth Tribe is born!
